ROTC colleges: common questions

What colleges have ROTC programs?

1,399 U.S. colleges have Army, Navy or Air Force ROTC. 324 of them host a unit on campus. The other 1,075 are cross-town partner schools whose students train with a nearby unit. Search by school name or city, or browse the list by state.

How many colleges offer ROTC?

1,399 colleges, counting host schools and cross-town partners: 1,069 offer Army ROTC, 165 offer Navy ROTC (NROTC) and 995 offer Air Force ROTC. Some offer more than one. There are 489 host units in all: 273 Army, 71 Navy and 145 Air Force.

Can I do ROTC if my college doesn't host a unit?

Often, yes. Many ROTC units have cross-town agreements with nearby colleges. Students at a partner school earn their degree there and train with the unit at the host college. We list 1,075 colleges that offer ROTC only this way. Each school page names the unit it partners with.

Which branch's ROTC is at the most colleges?

Army ROTC: 1,069 colleges, from 273 host units. Air Force ROTC is at 995 colleges (145 units) and Navy ROTC (NROTC) is at 165 colleges (71 units). Marine Corps officers come through NROTC as Marine-option midshipmen, so any NROTC college is also a path to a Marine commission.

Is ROTC free? What does an ROTC scholarship cover?

It depends on the branch and the award. Army scholarship winners choose full tuition and required fees, or room and board. The NROTC scholarship pays full tuition and required fees, a book stipend and a monthly allowance, but not room and board. Air Force Type 1 covers full tuition and fees, Type 2 covers tuition up to a cap and Type 7 covers in-state tuition rates. Many schools add their own room-and-board or tuition help for ROTC cadets.
