Tar Heel Battalion

About this program

The Tar Heel Battalion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill trains students to serve as officers in the U.S. Army while they pursue regular UNC degrees and campus life. The program is known for producing officers of high character who are competent and committed, and its cadets stay deeply involved in campus organizations, club and intramural sports, and volunteer groups. A hallmark of the battalion is its record of excellence: it won the prestigious MacArthur Award as the top program in 4th Brigade in 2025, adding to earlier wins in 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2023.

Built around a commitment to quality leadership and engagement with the UNC and Chapel Hill community, the Tar Heel Battalion holds cadets to a high standard while giving them everything a major research university has to offer. Cadets who complete the four-year Army ROTC curriculum and meet medical, fitness, and academic standards commission as officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.
