About this program
Air Force ROTC Detachment 590 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been developing Air and Space Force leaders since 1947. It describes itself as one of the nation's best small AFROTC detachments, where cadets, known as the Flyin' Tarheels, receive close mentorship from cadre who invest in each cadet's growth.
The detachment is especially strong for students who want to fly. It achieved a 100 percent Rated Selection Rate for its FY26 lieutenants and says it consistently exceeds the national average for Rated selection across career fields including Pilot, Air Battle Manager, Combat Systems Officer, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft. For a cadet whose goal is to become an Air Force aviator, that track record is a real draw.
Guided by the motto "Lead with Honor, Serve with Excellence," Det 590 combines leadership training, professional development, and real-world experiences to prepare the next generation of Air and Space Force officers at UNC.
