About this program
Tuskegee University's ROTC program carries one of the richest legacies in American military history. Founded in 1918, just after World War I, it is the only HBCU to offer ROTC across every branch of the U.S. military, including the Space Force, and it has continuously commissioned officers ever since. The program is rooted in the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators, and its lineage of leaders is extraordinary: Tuskegee ROTC produced General Daniel "Chappie" James, the first African American four-star general, and counted among its Professors of Military Science General Benjamin O. Davis Sr. and his son General Benjamin O. Davis Jr., commander of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Today the Tiger Battalion continues to develop officers of integrity, self-discipline, and self-reliance, with substantial scholarships available to selected students that may cover tuition, books, fees, and a monthly stipend. In 2016 the university established the Tuskegee University ROTC Hall of Fame, whose charter class honored 53 general officers, colonels, senior executives, and other figures central to Tuskegee's military heritage—an enduring recognition of a program that has shaped Black military leadership for over a century.
