Green Mountain Battalion

About this program

Norwich University holds a singular place in American military education: it is the birthplace of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and the nation's only private Senior Military College, with more than two centuries of officer development behind it. Army ROTC here is woven into Norwich's College of National Services and its Corps of Cadets, where first-year students—known as "rooks"—train alongside cadets pursuing Air Force, Space Force, Navy, and Marine Corps commissions. Cadets develop through classroom military science, leadership labs, and field training exercises.

The Green Mountain Battalion emphasizes discipline, respect, and responsibility while giving cadets room to align with a service branch and adjust their goals as they grow. As graduates of a Senior Military College, medically qualified cadets who complete all ROTC requirements are assured of a commission. Financial support is a notable strength: cadets whose ROTC scholarship covers full tuition can receive additional Norwich aid for room and board through the General I.D. White Scholarship, and students entering on a three-year Army ROTC scholarship may have four years of housing and meals covered by the Captain Alden Partridge Scholarship. Cadets who leave "The Hill" join a large network of serving alumni across the military and government.
